Budd Lake developed around the township's signature natural lake and later became a summer-resort community. Today it includes residential neighborhoods, schools, Route 46 businesses, municipal facilities and the Pax Amicus Castle Theatre.

Mount Olive Township
Mount Olive is a large western Morris County township where lake communities, historic villages, preserved open space, major recreation facilities and a substantial corporate and manufacturing base all meet. Its two principal communities are Budd Lake and Flanders.
The township stretches across roughly 32 square miles between Interstate 80 and Route 206, combining established neighborhoods, apartment and townhouse communities, farms, business parks, schools, historic resources and some of the most extensive municipal recreation facilities in the county.

Budd Lake & Flanders
Mount Olive's official history describes the township as consisting of two principal sections, each with its own identity and development pattern.
Flanders grew as an early village and transportation center. Today it combines historic streets, neighborhoods, schools, Route 206 retail, major corporate facilities, recreation and professional services.
These names remain important to Mount Olive's road network and historical geography. Waterloo Village itself lies primarily in neighboring Byram Township, with only a small historic-district portion extending into Mount Olive.
Landing is not one of Mount Olive's principal communities.
Current township sources consistently identify Budd Lake and Flanders as the two main sections of Mount Olive. Landing is associated with neighboring Roxbury Township and is treated separately by NJTGO.
Mount Olive history
The township's development reflects farming, iron mining, the Morris Canal, railroads, lake tourism and later suburban and corporate growth.
The Budd Lake name traces to John Budd, who acquired a large tract in the area during the early 18th century.
Flanders emerged as an early village and later expanded around churches, farms, mills and regional transportation routes.
The township was created on March 22, 1871 from portions of Roxbury Township and named for local landowner Benjamin Olive.
Budd Lake's resort era gradually gave way to year-round suburban growth, while highways and corporate development reshaped Flanders and the township's commercial corridors.
Remnants of the Morris Canal remain part of Mount Olive's historic landscape and are recognized among the township's important historic resources.
The Mount Olive Road and Flanders-Drakestown Road area is recognized for its historic significance and ties to the township's early settlement patterns.
The historic property at the entrance to Turkey Brook Park is part of the township's preservation efforts and is being planned for museum and meeting use.
Parks, recreation & open space
Recreation is one of Mount Olive's defining strengths. The township has preserved more than 2,000 acres through its open-space program and maintains a broad network of parks and facilities.
The township's major recreation complex includes soccer, football, baseball/softball, lacrosse, tennis/pickleball, basketball, volleyball, a dog park, pavilions, trails, Maier's Pond, memorials and Mount Playmore.
